Technique

The nordic walking technique is simple. It is necessary to stretch and warm up before the start. During the actual walk participants should be able to keep the same speed and be able to talk, if they cannot do so, the pace is too fast. The steps should be long and the whole foot should be used. The foot should hit the floor with the heel and a step forward should come from the toes. During the walk the left leg and right arm are moved forward simultaneously followed by the same action of the right leg and left arm. The pole is very useful for walking uphill as well as downhill. The correct pole size is very important for mastering the Nordic walking technique. The right pole size can be calculated using the following formula: height x 0.68 or simply by ensuring that the pole reaches the walker’s elbow. It is also needed to optimize the step length coordinating it with the arm movements. The poles assist a step forward so they shouldn't be placed in front of the body.
